Bolton Abbey is as famous for its Cistercian monastery as it is for its romantic landscape painted by Turner and Landseer, now enjoyed by thousands of visitors every year. The site and its landscape setting are extremely sensitive to change and balancing visitor needs with the heritage requires careful management. FAS Heritage have been involved in a range of projects at Bolton Abbey for over a decade, working as part of a team to define how and where change can be accommodated. We prepared a Heritage Capacity Assessment which underpinned a development options appraisal; additional work has been undertaken to inform a masterplanning process. We were involved in the delivery of the award-winning redevelopment of the 16th century Great Barn as a wedding venue, undertaking building recording, archaeological investigation and a watching brief.
