Castle Sinclair Girnigoe

Castle Sinclair Girnigoe lies near Wick, Caithness, situated dramatically on the southern lip of Sinclair Bay. Owned by Clan Sinclair Trust, the castle was in a perilous state and a programme of repair and public access works was undertaken between 2003 to 2012 to secure large parts of the monument. Work went hand-in-hand with a programme of archaeological research and provided a rare opportunity to explore one of the most important castles in Caithness. Work focussed on the rescue and repair of the Outer Ward and its ranges, as well as facilitating safe visitor access to this area of the castle complex. Work began with the preparation of a Conservation Management Plan, historic building recording and analysis, archaeological evaluation followed by controlled excavation. The combined results of this work have brought to light new understanding of the construction, layout, development and grandeur of the castle from the 15th to the 17th centuries. The project is currently being brought to press.
