Farne Islands

The team were delighted to be commissioned by the National Trust to produce a Conservation Management Plan for the Farne Islands, off the Northumberland coast. Widely known for its internationally important wildlife, the Farne islands have a long and fascinating history, reaching back to the 7th century when the island of Inner Farne was the final home of St Cuthbert. A small community of monks – the House of Farne – occupied the island through the medieval period, after which the islands played an important role in maritime navigation, with no less than seven lighthouses created on the islands from the 17th to the 19th century. The Farnes were home to Grace Darling, and the scene of her daring rescue of the stranded crew of the Forfarshire. The three-volume CMP presents a fresh understanding of the history of the islands, and their heritage significance, which will underpin future management and provide a balanced guide to managing the cultural and natural heritage hand in hand.
