Byland Abbey

Famously established in a marshy wilderness by monks who had searched for a permanent home, Byland Abbey represents an exquisite example of early Gothic Cistercian architecture. FAS Heritage have completed a number of projects in and around Byland Abbey for English Heritage. Geophysical survey and archaeological evaluation undertaken around Abbey Inn detected a complex of stone buildings identified as the remains of the Abbey guesthouse range. Evaluation was also undertaken across the Cellarer’s Yard in advance of the installation of new services. Excavation in advance of a klargester system for Abbey Inn encountered early remains related to the reclamation of land from marsh.
