As part of the 2022 redevelopment of one of York’s best-known landmark monuments, FAS Heritage were commissioned by English Heritage to undertake a range of archaeological work on Clifford’s Tower. The programme included Heritage Assessment, historic building recording, archaeological watching brief, excavation and structural watching brief. The programme won new information about the 1068 motte, the design and conception of the tower and its reinventions as a romantic ruin, prison tower and tourist destination.
